What is GRP?

Glass reinforced plastic (GRP), also known as fibreglass, is a composite material made from a plastic polymer reinforced with glass fibres. The fibreglass is saturated in a polyester resin, which fully hardens once mixed with a catalyst.

Due to the omnidirectional fibres and thickness of the matting, it provides high strength across all areas, yet being very lightweight.

Before & After

Old Felt Roof New GRP Fibreglass Roof

Flaws of Felt & EPDM Rubber Roofs

Felt and EPDM rubber system are often used for flat roofs due to the quick installation time and competitive pricing. However these do not offer the same durability and longevity as a fibreglass roof. Joins and seams lose their adhesive strength over time and can be further damaged by environmental factors.

Fibreglass Roofing Misconceptions

In recent years GRP roofs have gained popularity due to the promotion of the system in merchants. Often Builders will attempt to install a fibreglass roof with limited experience or knowledge, which results in the product getting a 'bad reputation'.

Common installation mixtakes include:

  • Laminating while it is raining, wet, or snowing
  • Pinholes caused by insufficient coating of the matting
  • Incorrect boarding e.g. plywood
  • Not using expansion joints

Very happy to have found Darren and Bradley who saved us from a leaking flat roof. Darren was very responsive and helpful through the quote process as our job was not straightforward. He helped organise scaffolding and Bradley did a brilliant job on the roof. Photos provided throughout to show us progress. 15 year guarantee. Definitely recommend them.

Darren and his crew came to my rescue after the last storm at the end of January 2024. Upon assessing the damage Darren organised scaffolding fitted the same day and covered the damaged flat roof! The end result looks amazing a fantastic product! I cannot praise this company high enough they were professional from start to finish a great company to deal with. Smartseal installed a GRP roof on our kitchen extemsion over 7 years ago. The roof is sound and trouble free and still looks fantastic. I have no hesitation in recommending this company and often see the vans around in the Oxted area.

GRP Flat Roofs

Our GRP flat roof system includes a base-resin, fibreglass chopped-strand matting and a pigmented resin for the topcoat. These roofs are boarded with 18mm t&g OSB3 sterling boards, and are laid with either 450g per m² matting (standard), 600g for heavy foot traffic, and 900g for green roofs.

Advantages of Glass reinforced polyester:

  • No joins or seams
  • No splits or cracking
  • 25-year guarantee
  • Smooth finish (optional non-slip)
  • Low maintenance
  • Choice of colours

GRP Overlays (Fibreglass, Felt, Asphalt & EPDM Rubber)

For felt, asphalt, fibreglass and epdm rubber roofs, we offer a flexible polyester resin overlay product such as Restec 2020. This product has various primers, which adheres to the existing surface, before the application of the resin. Unlike replacing the entire decking, which results in a smoother finish, overlays take the shape of the existing material.

Benefits of Overlays:

  • Cost effective (no removal of existing material)
  • More flexible than standard resin
  • 2-coat application
  • 20-30 year guarantee

GRP Pond Lining

Our GRP pond lining service offers a fully waterproof system, which adheres to new pond, pools, wet room tanking, and fountains. We also refurbish old lining, with the option of choosing from a wide range of colours.

Fibreglass lining consists of a 3 part process. A primer is used on all areas which require waterproofing, followed by the polyester resin and chopped-strand matting. After the waterproofing is complete, the entire area is sanded, then painted with a  a pigmented resin.

Benefits of fibreglass pond lining:

  • No seams or joins
  • Easy to clean
  • No effect on marine life
  • Sustainable materials
